From vacant lot to vibrant play
Esperanza
Esperanza reimagined a vacant lot in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood as a joyful community learning space. A security fence was transformed into a playful canvas that invites creativity, storytelling, and exploration while symbolizing collective pride and ownership. Using recycled materials and input from neighborhood residents, the installation reflects the resilience and energy of the community, creating a space that feels welcoming, safe, and alive. More than a physical transformation, Esperanza demonstrates how design can celebrate local culture and spark playful learning in everyday environments.
The Learning Goals
The Esperanza installation nurtures communication by engaging families in bilingual prompts that spark conversation and storytelling in English and Spanish. It fosters confidence as children see their culture and language reflected in a public space, reinforcing belonging and pride in their neighborhood. The installation also encourages creative innovation, inviting children to interact with their environment in playful and imaginative ways. Together, these experiences turn an ordinary fence into a meaningful opportunity for joyful learning and community connection.
The Team
The Esperanza installation in Kensington was created through a collaboration between FIFTEEN, the Esperanza Health Center, and Playful Learning Landscapes.
Supporters
The Esperanza installation was generously supported by the William Penn Foundation, whose commitment to education equity and community-driven design made this project possible.
