Pocket park with playful learning
Park in a Truck
Playful Learning Landscapes partnered with Park in a Truck to expand the model by weaving playful learning principles directly into community-designed green spaces. This extension of Park in a Truck offerings transforms vacant lots not only into vibrant parks, but also into environments where children and families can connect, explore, and learn through play.
The Learning Goals
At the 60th and Greenway Park, children and caregivers explore playful learning elements that spark conversation, creativity, and problem-solving. The Color Theory Trellis introduces children to patterns and color mixing, encouraging observation and critical thinking. Sorting Tables allow children to practice early math skills such as grouping, comparing, and categorizing while engaging in hands-on exploration. The I-Spy Mural fosters curiosity and attention to detail, prompting storytelling and collaborative play between children and adults. Story Starters inspire imagination, narrative-building, and early literacy skills, while Shape Games support spatial reasoning and recognition in playful, interactive ways. Together, these elements create opportunities for families to learn, move, and connect in joyful outdoor spaces designed by and for their community.
The Team
The 60th and Greenway Park was made possible through a collaboration between Park in a Truck, an initiative of Jefferson University, and Playful Learning Landscapes.
Supporters
The 60th and Greenway Park was generously supported by the William Penn Foundation, whose commitment to equitable access to playful learning made this project possible.
