Turning everyday spaces into joyful reading adventures
Reading Promise
Reading Promise was a citywide literacy initiative designed to make reading visible, accessible, and engaging in everyday spaces. By embedding playful prompts, storytelling cues, and interactive reading experiences throughout the community, the project encouraged children and caregivers to read, talk, and imagine together beyond traditional classroom settings.
Through vibrant visuals and conversation starters, Reading Promise supported meaningful adult-child interaction around books and stories. Families were invited to explore reading as an adventure. By activating public spaces with literacy-rich touchpoints, the initiative fostered communication, curiosity, and a culture of shared reading across the community.
The Learning Goals
Reading Promise strengthened communication by encouraging children and caregivers to engage in shared reading experiences, ask questions, and connect stories to their own lives through embedded prompts and storytelling cues. It supported critical thinking as families interpreted narratives, reflected on characters’ choices, and extended ideas through discussion. The initiative also fostered creative innovation by inviting children to imagine alternate endings, invent new characters, and build their own stories inspired by what they read.
