Celebrating heritage through play and learning
El Proyecto Grandote
As part of the Literacy Rich Neighborhoods Initiative, El Proyecto Grandote (The Big Project) promotes literacy through cultural traditions and storytelling. The installation includes vibrant cultural murals depicting Latin American heritage, a bilingual Lotería game in four languages, hand-crafted codices created through art and storytelling workshops, and an interactive map highlighting welcoming community spaces in Philadelphia. Together, these elements celebrate identity, language, and culture while fostering joyful learning for children and families.
The Learning Goals
El Proyecto Grandote promotes cultural literacy and storytelling through heritage-inspired activities. The Cultural Mural encourages communication as families share stories and discuss ancestral traditions. The Lotería game with prompts fosters critical thinking and creative innovation, inviting children to explore symbols and language across multiple cultures and languages. The Neighborhood Cultural Scavenger Hunt and Map builds collaboration and confidence, guiding families to discover community spaces and strengthen their sense of belonging in Philadelphia. Together, these elements create joyful, bilingual opportunities for literacy and cultural connection.
The Team
El Proyecto Grandote was created through a collaboration between Puentes de Salud, Playful Learning Landscapes, a team of local Latin artists, and the Puentes de Salud community.
