Spin, wash, read, and play
Playful Learning Laundromat
In partnership with Book Harvest in Durham, North Carolina, the Playful Learning Landscapes Action Network (PLLAN) created a laundromat space designed to transform wait time into learning time. The Playful Learning Laundromat features three interactive elements that spark curiosity, literacy, and family engagement. A vibrant Playful Learning Mural enlivens the space with imagery and prompts that encourage storytelling and conversation. The Letter Wall turns alphabet exploration into a hands-on experience that supports early literacy skills. A cozy Reading Nook invites children and caregivers to share books together, making literacy a joyful part of daily routines. This project shows how community spaces can become powerful opportunities for connection and growth.
The Learning Goals
At the Playful Learning Laundromat in Durham, children and caregivers engage in activities that strengthen literacy and family connection while supporting key skills from the 6Cs. The Playful Learning Mural sparks communication as families share stories, ideas, and conversations inspired by its imagery. The Letter Wall reinforces content by helping children recognize letters, form words, and connect language to everyday experiences. The Reading Nook fosters collaboration as children and caregivers read together, while also building confidence as children grow in their literacy abilities. Together, these elements create joyful opportunities for families to talk, read, and learn in a welcoming community space.
