Walking into stories

Story Trails

Story Trails at the Penrose Recreation Center in Philadelphia celebrate the power of community storytelling by turning everyday pathways into immersive, literacy-rich experiences. The trail features stories inspired by local voices and paired with colorful panels and playful prompts that invite families to read, imagine, and create together. Rooted in the culture and experiences of the neighborhood, the trail highlights themes like sportsmanship and community pride, encouraging children and caregivers to connect through stories while exploring their own creativity.

The Learning Goals

At the Philadelphia Story Trails, children and caregivers engage with tales rooted in their own neighborhoods while exploring playful learning panels that spark imagination, literacy, and connection. The trails foster communication as families read, discuss, and reflect on the stories together. They support critical thinking by inviting prompts and interactive challenges that deepen understanding of narrative, character, and setting. The experience builds confidence as participants see their voices and stories reflected in their city, reinforcing that their ideas and words matter in the public sphere.

The Team

The Philadelphia Story Trail was created in partnership with local author and artist Andre Chaney, whose work reflects the imagination and voices of neighborhood youth. This project was part of a larger effort led by KABOOM!, Too Small to Fail, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Read by 4th, and Playful Learning Landscapes. Working together, the team brought storytelling to public spaces across the city, combining literacy and play to create meaningful, community-driven places for families to learn, connect, and celebrate their stories.

Supporters

The Story Trails installations in Philadelphia were generously funded by the William Penn Foundation, through its Literacy-Rich Environments initiative, which supports efforts to bring literacy and learning opportunities into everyday places.
