A music-inspired play space celebrating rhythm, creativity, and community

The Yard on John Coltrane Street

As part of the KABOOM! Play Everywhere Philadelphia initiative, The Yard on John Coltrane Street reimagines a neighborhood outdoor space in Strawberry Mansion as a music-centered environment that celebrates the legacy of jazz legend John Coltrane. Designed in collaboration with community partners, the space incorporates interactive musical elements, gathering areas, and performance features that encourage children and families to explore sound and rhythm together.

The installation invites children to experiment with tone, tempo, and pattern through hands-on instruments while also providing space for performance and creative expression. By grounding the design in the cultural history of the neighborhood, The Yard connects playful learning to community pride and artistic heritage. The result is an active, engaging outdoor space where music becomes a tool for collaboration, imagination, and joyful interaction.

The Learning Goals

The Yard on John Coltrane Street strengthens communication by encouraging children and caregivers to explore sound together, describe rhythms, share musical ideas, and express themselves through performance and play.

It fosters collaboration as participants create music collectively, experiment with tempo and pattern in groups, and engage in shared performance experiences that require listening and coordination.

The installation also builds content knowledge in music by introducing foundational concepts such as rhythm, tempo, tone, pattern, and musical structure through hands-on exploration and active engagement.

The Team

The Yard on John Coltrane Street was created through a collaboration between Strawberry Mansion CDC, Playful Learning Landscapes, KSS Architects, and MGD.

Supporters

The Yard on John Coltrane Street was generously supported by KABOOM!’s Play Everywhere Philadelphia grant.
