Where every step sparks learning
Playful Learning Sidewalks
Seattle’s Learning Landscapes transform school sidewalks into interactive, cognitively rich pathways where children and caregivers encounter opportunities for playful learning on their daily walks. These sidewalk installations feature rulers, shapes, footprint patterns, number grids, and letter scrambles—turning ordinary pavement into spaces for counting, movement, pattern recognition, and literacy. By integrating learning into the built environment, the project encourages families to engage with math and language through play, making everyday travel an opportunity for discovery and connection.
The Learning Goals
Playful Learning Sidewalks encourage children and families to learn through movement, conversation, and exploration. The interactive designs featuring rulers, shapes, footprint patterns, number grids, and letter scrambles support content knowledge in math and literacy as children count, spell, and recognize patterns. The prompts naturally build communication as caregivers and children talk, compare, and problem-solve together. These playful interactions also foster critical thinking, inviting children to observe, predict, and make connections between symbols, numbers, and words in their environment. Together, these elements transform daily walks into opportunities for joyful, active learning.
